Lemosho Route

A Scenic and Well Balanced Path to the Summit

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the western side, this route is known for its wide open landscapes, steady altitude gain, and strong acclimatization profile. Climbers are treated to changing scenery each day, from forested slopes to expansive alpine terrain.

Lemosho is offered in 6-, 7-, and 8-day itineraries, allowing trekkers to choose a pace that best suits their fitness and comfort level. One of the route’s standout highlights is Cathedral Peak (3,872 m), a dramatic viewpoint on the Shira Plateau that offers some of the finest panoramic views on the mountain. The route is also home to the striking giant groundsel plants, found only on Kilimanjaro.

At Beyond Kilimanjaro Safaris, the Lemosho Route is recommended for climbers who value scenery, gradual ascent, and a quieter start to their journey.

Route Overview

The Lemosho Route begins on Kilimanjaro’s western slopes and joins the southern circuit after crossing the Shira Plateau. Compared to other routes, Lemosho allows climbers to spend more time at altitude before summit night, which greatly supports acclimatization.

Depending on the chosen itinerary, the route either starts with a lower-altitude forest trek (8-day option) or a high-altitude vehicle drop-off onto the Shira Plateau (6- and 7-day options). From there, all variations follow a similar path past Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

This route is considered moderately challenging and is suitable for both first-time climbers and experienced trekkers.
